Applying social responsibility at home - parent perspective

Social Responsibilities are an investment in the future, and have a significant effect on moral development. It is very important for parents to give the concept of social responsibility unmotivated by the potential of personal gain or doing something simply because it is the right thing to do. Parents can assist their children with moral responsibility by giving them house chores, or by letting they help senior citizens in their neighborhood. They can volunteer at nursing homes, hospitals and schools. “This helps promote the concept that we are responsible for the quality of our own communities” (Wentzel, 1998).

Moreover, the best way for parents to teach social responsibility is by being good role models. Staying involved with civic and community projects shows the parent's concern for others. “In this way, parents make valuable contributions to both society and to their children’s own personal well-being. It is these types of efforts that ensure the continued improvement of the basic human condition.”
